The Alonso Ravens Girl's Lacrosse Club is playing a club schedule this spring, preparing for its inaugural year as a Florida High School Athletic Association Varsity Program in spring 2014.
The team will join about 20 schools in the Tampa Bay area who have a boys or girls Lacrosse team.
Tim McGoff, a self-employed fitness trainer, is their coach.
The group consist of about 19 players, and the team is looking for more girls who may be interested.
A good lacrosse player has speed, agility and mental toughness, McGoff said. The game, which has rules similar to field hockey, incorporates skills from a variety of sports including softball, volleyball, soccer and basketball.
"It takes a lot of dedication and good listening skills and communication," said Briana Moya, 15, a sophomore at Alonso and coach on the team.
The team has been practicing five days a week in Westchase's Glencliff Park. Their next game will take place on Monday, Feb. 11 at Northlakes Park, 2650 N Lakeview Dr. Tampa, FL 33618. The game begins at 6:30p.m. The team will take on Palm Harbor University High School.
"Everybody is getting excited," Briana said.
