When Erika Nunez was a sophomore at Alonso High School Assistant Principal Brian Grantham helped her through a tough personal time.
"My mom and him had each others personal cell phone numbers," recalled Nunez, who graduated from Alonso in May and is headed to St. Petersburg Community College.
So when she found out Grantham was battling stage four colon cancer, she wanted to return the favor. On Thursday, Sept. 6, a fundraiser will be held for Grantham at TGI Friday's, 11705 W. Hillsborough Ave.
From 2 to 6 p.m., 20 percent of all regular priced entrees, sandwiches, desserts and alcohol will be donated to the Grantham's family for medical care expenses.
Grantham, who is married and the father of two sons, was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year. The cancer has since spread to his liver, Nunez said.
TGI Friday's on Hillsborough Avenue is a popular hangout after Alonso home football games. So it was logical to host the fundraiser there, she said.
"I think that he's such a great person that it’s like you can't not help him," Nunez said. "As a community, people who go to Alonso would say, 'Once a Raven, always a Raven.' It’s time everyone get together and help him out."
Nunez isn't alone in her sentiments.
"Mr. Grantham is a beloved member of the Alonso staff who has dedicated his entire adult life to educating our community's children and to always do his best to put their needs as his top priority," the Alonso website says. "He has helped so many children to choose the right path and make wonderful young adults. It is time for us to show our support and thanks for all he has helped us accomplish."
Proceeds for to-go orders will also be accepted. To place an order call Friday's at 813-891-6496 and mention the Grantham fundraiser.
