Blog Spotlight: Check Your Credit Report Annually
The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to check their credit report for debts you don't owe, inquiries not initiated by you and contact information changed without your approval.
It's your credit report. And the Better Business Bureau wants you to know that you are entitled to obtain a copy free of charge every year.
According to a blog posted on Westchase Patch by the BBB, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires nationwide consumer reporting company -- Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.
Once you obtain your credit report, be sure to check for these red flags of identity theft:
- Any inquiries not initiated by you;
- Any debts reported that are not yours; or
- Contact information, such as your address, that was changed without your approval.
