Kids Behaving Badly at Restaurants, What Should Happen?

A sign at a Tampa area pizza restaurant warns parents they'll be asked to leave if their kids act up. What's your take?

When kids misbehave at a restaurant, should the parents be kicked out?

That's the debate that's followed a recent Seminole Heights Patch story on a controversial sign placed at an area pizza restaurant.

Local residents have been divided over Cappy's Pizzeria's stance on kids acting up at the North Florida Avenue restaurant, where a sign reads, "Parents, for the safety and comfort of everyone, if you allow your child to run, scream, or misbehave, parties will be asked to leave.”

We're wondering what Westchase Patch readers think. Our neighborhood is home to several pizzerias and other restaurants that families frequent.

Do you think more restaurants should adopt this rule? Or is Cappy's out of line?

Patch reader Kay applauded the move, writing, "Bravo! Cappy's is now on my favs list and we will be there again soon! Parents need to stop and think that not everyone appreciates your 'little bundle of joy' and does not want to hear it screaming."

Facebook fan Angela Mann disagreed, writing, "I'm a behavior analyst and I work with parents whose kids are out of control. Kids (believe it or not) do not come with a manual and it's not necessarily that these parents are terrible."

Even Tampa Bay Times columnist Sue Carlton offered her take in an opinon column published Wednesday.

      So what's your take, Westchase?

Do you have other examples of children or parents behaving badly at local restaurants?

Would you be more or less likely to eat at a restaurant that warned parents of misbehaving kids they'd be kicked out?

It is about time, people want to have a night out and right now with the economy it has become a rare treat, if you want your kids to run amock, take them to chuckie cheese, or teach them some manners.

Leaving is the polite thing do when you can't get your child(ren) to settle down. It's part of teaching manners to your children. It's a shame people ignore their mis-behaving children and have to be asked to leave.

Who would disagree?? It's never right to let your kids run amuck in a public place. Outside of the fact that it's hugely disrespectful to the other people it's a safety issue. I bet the same idiot parents who let their kids run up and down the aisles with no discipline will also be the first to sue the restaurant when their brats get hot coffee, or a platter of food spilled all over them.

As a Baby Boomer mother and newly retired teacher of 32 years, i place the blame for the total deterioration of Western civilization on my generation. While we are the best educated and most socially progressive generation in our nation's history, we are also responsible for the most catastrophic and, I fear, irreversible changes to our culture. As we were busy tossing out so many of the values, manners, and mores of our parents' "greatest" generation (as each generation does, more or less), we replaced honoring our parents and their values with idolatry upon the heads of our children. They could do no wrong, no harm, and were/are a source of unending amusement and ego satisfaction for we, the Boomers. We, consequently, raised a generation to believe themselves at the epicenter of their parents' lives (which they were/are), that no matter how insufficient in achievement, education, manners, character, or morals they are their parents will continue to pick up the pieces for them, apologize for them, cover up for them, and do everything but let them grow up and stand on their own two feet. Is it any wonder then that Gen X considers discipline of their-now children a dirty word, and punishment as abuse??? It flows quite logically. When the world--- familial, educational, legislative, judicial, and social---was turned on it's collective head to accommodate the idiosyncratic nature of this narcissistic and RUINED generation, is it any wonder that we are in these straits!!!!

I'd love to know what the line is. At what point does a kid being a kid (laughing, walking from the booth to the arcade game) become grounds for being asked to leave? Also, what factor does the type of restaurant play?
