Young Actors Bring 'Aladdin' to Life

Westchase Community Theater is one of the area's "best-kept secrets."

  Behind the metal doors of the Westchase Elementary cafeteria is a group of dedicated actors. They range in age from kindergarteners to high school students, and their passion and talent rival many seasoned professionals. Though their YouTube video of their 2011 production of Cinderella has well over 1,000 hits, the Westchase Community Theater has remained one of the area's best-kept secrets. Randi Mitchell, a volunteer theather mom, hopes it won’t stay a secret for long. Mitchell and Vanessa Lewis, a Westchase Elementary music teacher, formed Westchase Community Theatre in 2008. Comedian Rahn Hortman Performs Saturday At The Chase Club

The Tampa-based comedian's performance has been described as "Clean but not soft."

Rahn Hortman's motto is "No matter what, just keep similing." Hortman brings his everyday-life based humor to The Chase Club this Saturday. Patch recently caught up with Hortman. Here's what he had to say about where his funnies come from. Patch: How did you get your start in comedy? Hortman: I started comedy when I came to Florida. I was always the class the clown...moved to Florida and gave it a shot. Patch: I see you grew up in Milwaukee. How has that influenced your comedy? Hortman: Growing up in Milwaukee has influenced my comedy. Being one of the most segregated cities in the country, it let me see two different worlds. Poet, Westchase Resident Venus Jones Performs at Women's Festival

Jones will perform at the 19th annual Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival

Freedom. Peace. Justice. "That's what I really stand for," explains poet Venus Jones on a recent evening. "Why can't I have the freedom to be me?" It's a message Jones has spent more than a decade spreading through numerous performances and published work and the Tampa Bay community and beyond. This weekend, Jones' message will reach the ears of thousands in Los Angeles. Jones is one of 24 artist who will perform at this year's Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival. In its 19th year the annual event draws artists, performers and entertainers from around the world. The festival's mission is to create an environment for women's voices to be heard. Musical Theatre Students Spin Tropical Tale of Life, Love

Students are performing a Broadway show next week

The exotic music, rhythmic dance, and bright tropical colors of a Caribbean island will pervade the Farish Center at Independent Day School-Corbett Campus next week, as musical theatre students take audiences on an early spring break with their production of the Broadway hit, “Once On This Island Jr.” The show garnered eight Tony nominations during its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Many Westchase students attend The Independent Day School in Carrollwood. The play is based on the novel, “My Love, My Love” by Trinidad-born Rosa Guy. The 1990 musical was composed by Stephen Flaherty, with book and lyrics by Lynn Aherns. A story of forbidden love and class distinction, the play is a theatrical adaptation of the popular …

Sickles Musicians Headed to Carnegie Hall

The school band's wind ensemble will play at the famous venue. They are raising money for the trip.

The Sickles High School band's wind ensemble will perform at Carnegie Hall on April 15, according to this Tampa Tribune story. Hosted by WorldStrides Heritage Performance, Sickles is one of 18 groups to play at the New York City hall. The Heritage organization gives students a chance to perform at famous musical halls. The ensemble will host fundraisers in the coming days to pay for their trip to New York City. The trip will cost $1,350 per student, according to the Tribune. Want to help? The next Sickles band fundraiser will be at the Citrus Park's Outback restaurant (11950 Sheldon Road in Tampa) on March 19.
