The Sickles Gryphons hosted the Lakewood Ranch Mustangs in regional semifinal action Thursday night.
Sickles High School boy’s basketball team defatted opponent Lakewood with a 57-32 victory during a semi-final game Thursday night. The win secured Sickles' place in the regional semifinals next week. Lakewood only trailed by five points at the end of the first quarter, and even outscored the Gryphons 14-10 in the fourth. But Sickles hit three three-pointers to cap a 13-0 run in the second quarter. To make matters worse, junior forward Malcolm Johnson caught fire in the third quarter, scoring 10 of his 18 game-leading points. "We were pleased with Malcolm tonight; with him we were able to attack the basket and cause problems for them in the paint," said Renaldo Garcia, head coach for the Gryphons. The Lakewood Mustangs went into the game …

Nineteen organizations raised funds during the 2012 Presidential Preference Primary.
Adopt A Precinct, a partnership between the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office and civic-minded organizations who serve as poll workers on Election Day, experienced continued growth and participation during the 2012 Presidential Preference Primary. "During the 2011 City of Tampa elections, we had 12 organizations participate. That number grew to 19 in the Presidential Preference Primary, and I expect the program and community partnerships to continue to grow as we get closer to the primary and general elections," said Earl Lennard, Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. During the 2012 Presidential Preference Primary, the 19 organizations raised a total of $12,684.27 for their designated charities and causes. …

Cheers, Westchase! Each week in this column, we introduce you to a new wine, beer or cocktail you can find right here in the neighborhood.
Sure, champagne and wine have long been symbolic of a romantic evening out. But this Valentine’s Day, you may be surprised to learn about two specialty beers that can help you brew up a little romance. Here are two Valentine’s beers you can find at World of Beer Westchase. Lindenmann's Lambic Framboise Unmistakably sweet, this Belgian beer has a palate of raspberries with undertones of fruity acidity to add some tartness. And with its vibrant rose color, it looks like a modern-day, sparkling love potion. “To me, it tastes just like candy,” says World of Beer general manager Dung To. Those who enjoy the raspberry taste but find the sweetness to be too much, can mix (or rather, layer) Lindemann's Lambic on draft with Belgian white ale such…

Those who favor the Texas congressman gathered at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace to watch the election results.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might have taken Florida, but that doesn’t mean Ron Paul supporters are counting out the Texas congressman. Paul Fosse of Citrus Park compared Paul’s campaign to a football game. “Very few football teams quit after the first three minutes,” he said. “They keep going. It seems kind of silly to give up after four states.” Fosse helped organize a Ron Paul Watch Party Tuesday evening at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace using meetup.com and Facebook. About 50 people watched TV news stations report Florida’s election results. Paul hovered around 7 percent of the vote. “We’d be happier if he was in double digits,” Fosse said, “but what’s great is to see the enthusiasm of the supporters.” Young and…
Mitt Romney earns a convincing victory over Newt Gingrich and other Republican nominees in Florida's Presidential Preference Primary.
Mitt Romney won the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on Tuesday, earning the state's 50 delegates and distancing himself from Newt Gingrich as the Republican front-runner for 2012. The Associated Press projected Romney's commanding victory shortly after 8 p.m. when the final polls closed in Florida's Panhandle. The former Massachusetts governor had taken 46 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Gingrich after returns from 99 percent of the polls were in. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Ron Paul 7 percent. "Florida, you're the best," a victorious Romney told a crowd gathered at his primary night celebration at the downtown Tampa Convention Center. "I am disappointed," said Cindy Singleton, 51, an area resident and Newt Gingrich …

Bob White talked with Patch about the party's feelings about the Republicans on the ticket and how they can appeal to the state's Tea Party movement.
In 2010, the Florida Tea Party hit the pavement working to help get candidates like Florida Gov. Rick Scott and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio elected. The same could be said about several Republican candidates across the country. Newt Gingrich has managed to sway some in Florida's Tea Party, but no candidate has ignited zeal in the group. And with that lack of excitement, many wonder if the Tea Party's absence from the active campaign will hurt the candidate who becomes the Republican nominee - especially if the winner is among their less desirable of choices. Westchase Patch sat down with Bob White, a 54-year-old Westchase resident and active member of the Tea Party. Here's what he told us... Patch: When and why did you become involved in the Tea…
The Huffington Post is reporting that Newt Gingrich's campaign is using a recorded call in Florida claiming that Mitt Romney once took kosher food away from Holocaust survivors.

@Joe -- markets are terrible at creating new technologies that require huge amounts of research over many years. In the USA, we live by short term financial returns, which these projects never provide. Most government market-making takes place in the form of grants to universities or joint industry/military/US department projects. Government also uses tax schemes to prop up markets. For example, …   more ›
