Donate a Bike Get a Free Pizza This Saturday

The Westchase Rotary is hosting its annual bike drive this weekend.

Drive through Westchase neighborhoods and you'll see there's no shortage of children and adults zipping by on bright, new, shiny bicycles.

But what about those kids who weren't able to get a bike this year?

The Westchase Rotary wants to help them. On Saturday, Jan. 5 the Rotary is teaming up with San's Pizza and Flying Fish Bikes to hold its annual bicycle drive.

People are asked to bring their old bikes (broken or fixed) to the parking lot of Flying Fish Bikes at 13034 Race Track Road between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

"It's important because there are over 3,500 homes in Westchase that have bikes," said Christy Young, Rotary member. "And instead of throwing them away or having them sit in their garage, they can make a difference in someone's life."

Last year, the Rotary bike drive collected 75 bikes. This year the goal is 100.

God's Pedal Power Ministry, a nonprofit organization that refurbishes bikes, will take the donations and repair them before distributing them to local children's homes, foster kids, and homeless adults needing transportation.

"Rotary is the worlds largest service club," Young said. "We support this organization as it gives kids and adults bikes that can't afford them."

As a bonus, those who donate bikes will recieve a free pizza from San's Pizza and Flying Fish Bikes will offer 10 percent off the purchase of any new bicycle.

Mike Weimar, store manager at Flying Fish Bikes, said he got involved with the bike drive because he trusted that God's Pedal Power would make sure the bikes ended up in the right hands.

"As much as we like to be the neighorhood bike shop, we also like to give back to the community," Weimar said. "We know a lot of people want to see their bikes go to a good home instead of ending up in a landfill."

If you're not able to drop a bike off on Saturday, you can arrange for pick-up by contacting Christy Young at 727-580-1679.
