Don't Miss Westchase Food Truck Rally Today at 6pm

Westchase's first food truck rally rolls into the neighborhood today, Friday March 9 at 6pm.

The event will take place at the West Park Village Swim and Tennis Center, 149 Parley Drive.

The food truck rally idea came to 16 year old Ben Weiner while he was watching the Travel Channel.

There was a show on about food truck rallies. And Ben wondered what Tampa's food truck scene had to offer. After some research he found that none of the popular food trucks came out to Westchase.

"They've kind of stuck downtown and Pinellas," Ben said. "But none of the food trucks have experimented in the Northwest area."

Ben decided he'd kill two birds with one food truck rally. As an 11th-grade IB student at Robinson High School, he needed to complete a service project to fulfill his semester requirements. He also wanted to bring a taste of the food truck scene to Westchase.

As a result Westchase's first food truck rally will take place on March 9 at the West Park Village Swim and Tennis Center. Fifteen percent of the proceeds will go to the American Heart Association.

"My family has had a history with heart disease," Ben said. "I also know a young baby born with with hypoplastic left heart syndrome."

Ben, a Harbor Links resident, lost both of his grandparents on his mom's side to heart disease, he said.

He's excited to raise money for the association, which contributes to research to reduce deaths caused by heart disease.

To prepare for the rally, Ben put together a list of trucks he was interested in and asked if they would participate.

"I got an overwhelming amount support from the food truck community," Ben said.

The rally will be combined with the monthly Westchase movie night. The movie begins at 7 p.m. in . The movie for the night is "Spider Man 3."
