Community Corner

Ready. Set. Sell! Westchase Community Yard Sale is this Saturday!

The sales go from 8am-1pm throughout the community.

This Saturday the early bird gets the worm and the DVDs, the clothing, the knick knacks, and possibly even the small and large appliances.

Westchase is hosting its bi-annual Westchase Community Yard Sale. With hundreds of residents, there’s sure to be at least one irresistible item waiting at a participating Westchase home.

“The (garage sale) location is everybody’s driveway. We hang up two banners on either end of Linebaugh Avenue and people drive in and out of neighborhood," said Charlotte Adams, Office Manager at Westchase Community Association. "The guidelines are basically ‘be courteous and respectful’ because it does get a little crazy."

Jean Bostock, owner of Nanny Jeans Childrens and Maternity Consignment and New-2-U Mens, has been a garage sale veteran of over forty years.

We chatted with her about finding the best yard sale finds:

Patch:  What is the best advice for a novice garage sale shopper?

Bostock:  Get there early and have the courtesy to bring small bills. No one wants to be given a twenty for a dollar item. Don’t be afraid to haggle on the price.  Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn’t. Wrangling prices is pretty much expected and part of the fun of yard sales.

Patch: What about a seller? Do you have advice for someone who’s never hosted a garage sale before?

Bostock:  Yes, if the sale begins at 8am, be prepared to be up at 6am or 7am to get your items out in time. The customer shouldn’t have to wait for you. You choose the time and you should be ready for them.

Patch: What about pricing?

Bostock: Make sure your prices are clearly marked and be willing to negotiate on the price. Like I said before, that’s part of the fun of garage sales. I’ve been to some yard sales where you feel like you need your credit card for items that weren’t even high-end. The seller just had too high of expectations.  Try to price fairly, the customer walks away with a great deal and you get money for something you no longer wanted anyway.

Patch:  Anything else?

Bostock:  Make sure you have enough cash and coins to make change. If you are unprepared, being given a twenty for a small ticket item could easily wipe you out. At the end of the day - items that you don’t sell and no longer want or need like clothing, small appliances and furniture – don’t throw away. Contact a local charity or post on Craigslist or Freecycle. Donate them to someone in need.
