Westchase Golf Club to Host Tournament to Benefit Leukemia Society

Personal connection to the disease attracts coordinator to fight for the cause.

Robert Ahern has played in charity golf tournaments before. After all, as the owner of his own insurance company it’s good for business to be seen at such events.

However, when Ahern played in a tournament last year in Orlando to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, it struck a personal chord.

“Leukemia has touched me because when I was in second grade a friend of mine died of leukemia,” Ahern said. “Also, my cousin died of leukemia, so it’s always been something I’ve worked on involving golf tournaments. But this is the first time I’ve tried to do this on our own and not through an association like the Carrollwood Area Business Association.

Ahern, along with co-tournament chairperson Renee Sticker, wanted to bring the Orlando tournament concept to Tampa. Together they developed the idea to host the Tee Off 4 A Cure tournament to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the June 10.

Sticker took her cue from her cousin, Clint Carbonneau, who planned the Orlando tournament.

“He’s part of the Team in Training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that develops fundraisers,” Sticker said. “I told him if he could get over to Tampa where I am we would try to host a tournament at Westchase.”

Ahern hopes to have 100 signups, but at the moment the total sits between 35-40.

“Times are tough,” Ahern said. “People tend to sign up at the last moment.”

The cost for an individual is $90 and $360 for a foursome. Lunch, dinner and door prizes are included.

The tournament is a best ball scramble format and starts at 1 p.m.
