Westchase Turns 20; Let The Party Planning Begin

Community organizations meet to discuss a year-long celebration.

Westchase turns 20 this year and one group is hoping to find a way to celebrate in style.

The World of Westchase recently approached the Westchase Community Association (WCA) and the Community Development District (CDD) seeking support and approval for a year-long birthday bash for the occasion.

WCA is encouraging community residents to volunteer and get involved with planning the celebration as well. A budget has not been finalized. However, WOW has asked the WCA to commit to a $10,000 investment, said Joaquin Arrillaga, president of the WCA.

The board expressed support for the funding at the February 10 meeting, but requested additional information from WOW.

In the 20 years since it's groundbreaking, Westchase has grown into 29 neighborhoods featuring two swim and tennis centers, a golf course, professional offices, day care centers, shops, restaurants and bars since initial construction of the community started in 1991.

“(The plan) seems very exciting,” Arrillaga said during the association board meeting.

The celebration could happen this summer and include a carnival, fireworks show, concerts and movies in the park and other celebrations. Events would cater to kids and adults, with jazz concerts as well as movie nights at the park.

“I admire the WOW for stepping forward and saying they are going to organize this, because that’s really ambitious,” said Mary Griffin, WCA treasurer.

Representatives from WOW, WCA and CDD will meet again in March to discuss further planning and budgeting for the project.
