What To Watch: DVD Picks of the Week

Our friends at Blockbuster Video in Westchase give us the "Must See" rentals this week.

Blockbuster Video Store Manager Rebekah Vigliatura selected the following three movies to keep you entertained all weekend long.  Read on for the synopsis, rating, runtime and testimonial as to why it got two thumbs up from Rebekah!

  • Family Pick:  The Golden Globe-nominated hit “Despicable Me” featuring the voices of funny man Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and the timeless Julie Andrews.  Super villain Gru (Carell) and his army of minions are poised to pull off the crime of the century – stealing the moon.  He inherits three little orphans – Margo, Agnes and Edith – as pawns in his grand scheme and soon discover that his love for the little girls may trump his quest for as the greatest thief that ever lived.  Rated PG for scatological humor and mild violence.  (Runtime: 95 minutes)

“Though Steve Carell does a great job, the little girls are even funnier.  Everyone in my family enjoyed it – the kids and the grandparents alike!”

  • Comedy Pick:  The ensemble 2010 flick, “You Again” starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman and Betty White as “Grandma Bunny”.  What do you do when your brother is engaged to the woman who bullied you throughout your teen years?  In “You Again”, Kristen Bell – now a successful public relations executive – still has flashbacks of when Yustman’s popular cheerleader character tortured her.  You might say ‘like mother, like daughter’, as Weaver (Yustman’s mom) also wreaked havoc on Curtis’ (Bell’s mom) life back in the day.  Rated PG for scatological humor and mild language.  (Runtime: 105 minutes)

“It was very funny and a humorous depiction of how high school life really can be.  The mother/daughter dynamic was also great.”

  • Drama Pick:  Upon its release, “Love and Other Drugs” generated some buzz thanks to the two stars’ – Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway – intense love scenes.  Gyllenhaal is Jamie Randall, a flirtatious, charming pharmaceutical rep.  Hathaway is Maggie Murdock, a free-spirited waitress.  After an awkward initial encounter, the two realize how much the care about and need each other and finally succumb to the intense chemistry between them.

“This is definitely not a kids movie – the actors are undressed for a good portion of the movie!  That aside, it is a love story, but not a chick flick.  I think guys will also enjoy this one.”
