Chasing Tahoe Fox

The band met at World of Beer where they performed Wednesday night.

Tahoe Fox, a band with its origins in Westchase, performed Wednesday night at World of Beer 7:30pm-10:30pm.

Patch caught up with the trio composed of Kim Stein (vocals/rhythm guitar), Rhett Rushing (lead guitar) and Jaime Viera (percussion/drums) to talk origins, influences and of course music:

Patch: How was Tahoe Fox formed?

Kim: We met at the in Westchase. I worked at the World of Beer, and the drummer, Jaime, asked how he would be able to play music there. I asked why and he said that he was a band looking for a singer and I said I’m a singer looking for a band.

Patch: How long have you guys been together?

Jaime: Since September of 2009.

Patch: Where did you get the name Tahoe Fox?

Rhett: We were going to call the band the Kim Stein trio, and we all thought that sucked [laughs.] When Kim was little she had a Pomeranian that she called Tahoe Fox and we all thought, “eh good enough."

Patch: Where is your favorite local venue?

Rhett: Skipper’s is probably our favorite at this point. We’ve performed there about three or four times.

Patch: Your website says that Tahoe Fox specializes in unique covers. What’s the most unique cover in your repertoire?

Rhett: “That Time” or “Folding Chair” by Regina Spektor. We also like to cover Johnny Cash.

Patch: How would you describe the genre of music that you perform?

Kim: That’s a hard one. It’s folk, rock, alternative. We’re focusing on moving into origninal music.

Patch: Who is the songwriter in the group?

Rhett: Kim usually comes up with an idea, and then we usually build upon that.

Patch: Who are your biggest influences?

Jaime: I come from a Latin hip-hop background. I was raised on salsa and my uncle got me into hip-hop. I have more of an urban influence.

Patch: Where else in Tampa can we her Tahoe Fox play?

We are performing at the Bunker in Ybor on July 21, and we are opening for the Urban Cowboys at the Bricks in Ybor City on August 27.
