Travel Puts A New Spin on Fundraising

You can take a vacation and help your favorite charities at the same time!

Over the past few years, the economy has been shaky and unpredictable.  Unemployment is up, housing prices are down, and people are spending less and less money.

The trickle down can be seen and felt everywhere, but Non-Profit Organizations and Charities have been particularly hard hit.  In tough times, charitable giving can be considered unnecessary.  Fewer incoming donations = fewer employees on staff.  Fewer employees = fewer services available and fewer people getting the help they need.

Families want to help, but in many cases are reorganizing their own finances to address the slow economy.  They may not have the extra funds to give to their favorite charities, and vacations may be on a much smaller scale.

One of the newest trends is Travel as a Fundraiser.  People still need and want to vacation, and they still want to help their favorite organizations.  Fundraising Travel allows for both!

How does it work?  A local Travel Agent can assist you in organizing a trip (cruises are the most popular.)  It’s advertised as a Fundraiser for an organization, and promoted by both the organization and the Travel Agent.  Since a group of people will be going, group rates apply that are usually less than what you might find on your average cruise or trip.  As cabins/rooms are booked, a portion of every booking is applied to the charitable organization.  Sometimes it’s a flat dollar amount per booking; other times it’s a percentage.

As a former Non-Profit Fundraiser, I know first-hand how difficult it can be to raise money, especially in tight times.  Fundraising projects need to be easy, low-or-no cost to the organization, and attention-grabbing.  A "Cause Cruise" accomplishes all of these goals, and has the potential to incorporate people from all ages and varying income levels.  On one ship, someone on a tighter budget might book a low-cost interior cabin, while someone with a it more expendable income can splurge on a balcony or suite.  Either way, a great vacation will be had, and money will be raised for the cause.

In the end, it’s a win-win-win situation.  Families get to go on vacation, and at a better value.  Everyone gets to help their favorite organization(s).  Charitable organizations enjoy an unexpected influx of much-needed funds, and an increased awareness about their cause.

Do you have an organization or cause close to your heart that you'd like to help? Do you serve with or work with a charity that is looking for an innovative and fun way to fundraise? If so, consider organizing or attending a Fundraising Vacation!  Contact your local Travel Agent to find out more!
