Beer Lovers Rejoice Over Mellow Mushroom Paddles

Each week "Cheers, Westchase!" helps you kick off your weekend, highlighting either a beer, cocktail or wine you can find right here in the neighborhood.

If there are two things we know for sure, they are that 1) is a veritable pizza-lover's paradise, and 2) Nothing goes better than pizza with beer.

Incidentally, the psychadelic "pizza baker" offers a wide vareity of domestic and imported brews. When you sidle up to the bar and you're faced with all...those...taps, the choice for the perfect accompaniment to your pie can be a tough one.

Relax. Flights, or "paddles," as they call them here, are a great way to try a variety of beers, in small portions, all at once.

Recently Cheers Westchase! headed to to try a paddle ($6.) In this one, pictured, were five unique beers that paired nicely with a Portobello Hoagie -- a grilled mushroom sandiwch with artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, spinach and a blend of mozzerella and feta. Yes, aside from their delicious pizza that is most certainly the piece de resistance of their menu, Mellow Mushroom offers hoagies of all sorts -- from the meaty steak and cheese to vegetarian options like grilled tempeh and tofu. But we digress from the important fact: when creating your paddle, you are the master of your domain. Choose any five from their extensive beer list, and get to sampling.

Here's the line-up we sampled during a recent visit:

1. Dale's Pale Ale. Made by Oskar Blues Brewery in Lyons, Colorado, this is one of the hottest beers in the craft brew industry right now.

2. Magic Hat No. 9. An old favorite for many, this is a dry and crisp ale made in Burlginton, Vermont.

3. Bell's Oberon: A wheat ale with spicy hop character and mildly fruity aromas, brewed in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

4. Zombie Killer Cider: This is basically a hard apple cider made with honey and tart cherries. The flavor is an....let's say "interesting" combo that tastes like a blend of cherries, wine, beer and champagne.

5. Hotter Than Helles: A Tampa-brewed lager made by Cigar City Brewery -- it's so important to support local establishments whenever possible, and this one is a winner.

Expand your horizons, friends. It can be fun to experiment with different flavor profiles. Order a paddle with a friend. Compare, contrast, make tasting notes - you may even discover a new favorite. There's a chance there might be one in the mix that you just don't fancy (read: #4...yikes!) but since the little samples are just 4 or so ounces, no harm, no foul. Just take note for future reference, and move on to the next!

So put down the brand name, watered-down beer you drank in college and head to Mellow Mushroom to give a try to somehting new.

Cheers, Westchase!
