Westchase Bustles on 'Tropical Storm Isaac Day'

Tropical Storm Isaac didn't slow down many in Westchase

Tropical Storm Isaac may have tried to shut down the city, but some Westchasers went on about their day despite severe weather passing through.

A drive around the neighborhood revealed lines at local banks and steady traffic at grocery stores.

Great Clips on Linebaugh Avenue resembled a busy Friday, said manager Wendy Philoyow.

"We've seen 25 people this morning," Piloyow said about the shop, located at 12213 W. Linebaugh Ave. "This would compare to Friday afternoon. Usually we're not this busy in the morning."

Lack of competition may have also contributed.

"A lot of the other local hair cutting places are closed because of the hurricane," Philoyow said.

With schools and libraries closed on Monday, places like the Northwest YMCA were a hot commodity.

"I just wanted to get out," said Marilyn Tedrow, a YMCA member working out on the exercise bike in the wellness center. "I was tired of staying in."

Parents definitely took advantage of the childcare options at the Y.

There were about 70 children in the Y's nursery on Monday.

"Typically when the kids are back to school we'll have 45-50 kids," said Ashley Sorenson, executive director at the Northwest YMCA, located at 8950 W. Waters Ave.

The Y's morning exercise classes had about double the attendance.

"We were definitely busy," Sorenson said. "Not quite what we expected, but we were prepared."
