Community Grants and Donations Fund Summer Camp for University Area Children

TAMPA, Fla. – (May 23, 2014) – The University Area Community Development Corporation, Inc.’s (UACDC) second annual DreamCatchers Summer Camp is being funded in the form of five generous grants, two in-kind donations and one raffle contribution.

UACDC was awarded grants in the amounts of $5,000 from the DeBartolo Family Foundation, $1,000 from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which houses their District I offices within the boundaries of the University Area, and $1,500 from the new Walmart Supercenter located at Bearss and Nebraska avenues. Both Molina Health and Wells Fargo assisted with funding for last year’s program and awarded grants for this year’s camp in the amount of $2,000 and $7,500, respectively. In addition to the grants, the Hillsborough County Summer Food Program provided an in-kind donation of $11,000 to cover the cost of each camper’s daily breakfast, lunch and snack and the New Tampa YMCA provided a $2,000 in-kind donation to go toward camper activities. Carrollwood Area Business Association (CABA) also donated $534 after selecting the UACDC as its quarterly charity recipient from funds raised during on-going 50/50 raffles.

“The DreamCatchers Summer Camp keeps our neighborhood children engaged in learning, which is essential to their continued growth,” said UACDC’s Executive Director & CEO, Dan Jurman. “We are grateful to our community partners for their continued support of the programs that serve the University Area residents.”

The camps provide a wide variety of activities designed to keep children active through the summer, while maintaining skills acquired during the recent school year. The all-inclusive camp features swimming lessons, sports, arts and crafts, music lessons, games, performing arts, lessons in technology and field trips to the Museum of Science and Industry and Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

In keeping with First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative, a “Fit Kids” element has also been incorporated into the camp’s curriculum. “Let’s Move” is about putting children on the path to a healthy future and reversing the trend of childhood obesity in our country.

Registration for UACDC’s DreamCatchers Summer Camp is now open and the camp accommodates fifty children between five and 12 years of age on a first come, first served basis.

The eight-week, Monday through Friday camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is divided into two sessions. The first four-week session begins June 16 and the second starts July 14. There is a $10 registration fee and each session is $80. Reservations are guaranteed when the first session is paid in full one week prior to the start of the camp. Applications may be picked up at the UACDC’s main office located at 14013 North 22nd Street in Tampa. For more information, please call 813-558-5212.
