Mail Carriers Food Drive This Saturday

This weekend once again mail carriers and Westchase area residents will come together to help those who need help putting food on the table.

Now in its 21st year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place on Saturday, May 11. That day residents are asked to leave a nonperishable item like peanut butter, soup or pasta in a sturdy bag next to their mailboxes before normal mail delivery time.

Postal carriers will collect the food which will be donated to local Feeding America food banks across the country. Last year, letter carriers collected more than 70 million pounds of food, according to a Stamp Out Hunger press release.

Each year the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Postal Service's union, organizes the event.

"The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is important for our local communities because it helps stock food banks and pantries for summer a time when there’s an increased need for food assistance, especially for children who are out of school," said Fredric V. Rolando, NALC president. "The letter carriers are committed to supporting the drive by picking up and delivering food donations to local Feeding America food banks and hunger relief organizations in their markets."
