Relay For Life Westchase Kicks Off

It's that time of year again when teams gear up for a good cause.

For the past few years droves of people have flocked to Davidsen Middle School in the spring to raise money for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life Westchase event.

Last year about 50 teams participated raising $94,000 for the society during the event that takes place at Davidsen Middle School.

This year is on track to be bigger and better, said Samantha Lauf, American Cancer Society community representative.

So far 12 teams have signed up for the Relay for Life event and $861 has been raised.

"This is typical for January," Lauf said. "This is when we hit the year running.

The Relay for Life Westchase goal is to raise $100,000 in 2013.

"So we need all Westchase hands on deck," Lauf said.

This year's event takes place at 6 p.m. on May 4 at Davidsen Middle School, 10501 Montague St.

To get things jump started, a kickoff party is set for 6 p.m. on Jan. 24. The party is tentatively scheduled to take place at the school but the location could be changed, Lauf said.

"We ask anybody that's just curious to come because we're going to show them and teach them how to get involved," Lauf said.

The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's annual signature fundraiser. People join teams of 10-15 and for one night they spend 18 hours walking.

"Cancer does not sleep so for one night neither do we," Lauf said.

In addition to the walking, teams sell a variety of items from crafts to baked goods. All the money goes to the American Cancer Society.

The event's signature color is purple, which represents the society's mission to beat all forms of cancer.

Last year the Westchase Walgreens Team, which is based out of the 7925 Gunn Highway location, was the highest Relay for Life Westchase fundraiser. The group brought in $20,000, Lauf said.

Lauf said the Relay for Life Westchase planning team is also looking for volunteers. To volunteer or RSVP for the kickoff party, email Samantha Lauf at samantha.lauf@cancer.org or call 813-319-5932.
