Tampa Latinos explore tech careers through AT&T's National High Technology Day

Twenty-three students from Jefferson High School were among more than 1,900 students nationwide participating in the AT&T Hispanic/Latino Association’s National High Technology Day on Thursday. The goal behind the annual event is to get more minority students interested in science, math and engineering career opportunities by exposing them to positive role models in science and technology.

Thursday’s half-day mentorship program included several hands-on technical activities, including the MIT App Inventor workshop, a tool that helps students design and program their own app, and a session about Arduino, an open-source electronics platform used to create interactive objects. Volunteers engaged teens in interactive workshops to provide the type of technical training that is not part of a regular classroom curriculum.

The 16th annual HACEMOS National High Technology Day reached more than 1,900 high school students in 30 cities. New this year, students had the chance to test drive the It Can Wait driving simulator and see tech demos.
