Changes To County Trash Pick-Up Loom

Hillsborough County Commissioners have discussed decreasing trash pick up from twice a week to once, as they consider renewing contracts with trash collecting companies.

After almost two decades of letting the same trash pick-up companies handle county residents' waste, the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners is considering other options, according to a story in today's St. Petersburg Times.

The three companies that handle the county's garbage collection are: Republic Services, Waste Management and Waste Services. The county's contracts with these companies expire in 2013.

Some commissioners argue the trash collection service should be opened to competitive bids. With that change could come others, including decreasing trash pick-up from twice a week to once a week and maybe even lowering the cost of trash collection for residents.
