Keystone Park Expansion On Hold

County officials are on the hunt for land to locate the park.

Those who frequent the Keystone Recreation Center who were looking forward to a promised expansion of the adjacent park will have to wait a bit longer.

That's because plans to purchase 40-acres across the street from the recreation center for a regional park have now been put on ice.

"This project is currently on hold," said Kemly Green, community relations coordinator for Hillsborough County. "The intention had been to acquire property in the Keystone area on Gunn Highway."

That property has been taken off the market, Green said.

Funding for the park project had been included in the recently approved 2013 county budget.

The total park expansion was to cost about $3.1 million, of which $1.6 million was included in the recently approved budget. Funding for the park expansion was taken from a pot of money that had been set aside for the Citrus Park Community Center. The decision angered Citrus Park residents who had been looking forward to the center.

While the Keystone Park expansion is on hold, county officials are actively looking for another parcel of land to build the project, Green stated.
