Local Cold Weather Shelters to Open

Hillsborough County's shelters, which have already opened three times this year and served about 600 people, will again help the area's homeless and those without adequate heat.

Hillsborough County's cold weather shelters will again be open Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, for the homeless and those who live in homes without adequate heat.

Tampa Bay area teamperates are expected to reach a low of 40 degrees Friday night and about 42 on Saturday. A freeze watch is in effect for Friday night for Hillsborough County and much of the Tampa Bay area.

Hillsborough's shelters have opened three times this year, and more than 600 people have turned to the shelters to keep warm, officials said.

Hillsborough's cold weather shelters are:

  • Salvation Army, 1514 N. Florida Ave. in Tampa
    This shelter opens at 4 p.m. and is only for adults.

    This shelter opens at 5:30 p.m. and is for homeless individuals and families with children in the Brandon area.
