What you need to know about what's happening this week in your community

  1. Learn about growing from Jim Hawk, Master Gardener for Hillsborough County, in this introductory class: "Dooryard Fruit for Central Florida." The session will cover the cultivars that do best in Hillsborough County as well as the pros and cons of each and how each fruit is used. Avocados, bannanas and lychees are considered Dooryard fruits. Jan. 11, 7pm-8pm at , 11211 Countryway Blvd in Tampa.
  2. Learn storytelling during the first part of a 4-part workshop. The Storytelling Festival will be held on Hillsborough High School on April 21, 2012. This workshop is training for the festival. Jan. 10, 4pm-5pm at , 17808 Wayne Road in Odessa.
  3. A memorial service for Susan Mikolajczyk, 59, a longtime kindergarten teacher at , will be held on Jan. 13, 5 p.m. the auditorium at Sickles High School, 7950 Gunn Highway in Tampa. Mikolajczyk died unexpectedly in her sleep while in New York.
  4. The Westchase Community Association will meet on Thursday, Jan. 12, 7pm at the WCA Office Building 10049 Parley Dr. in Tampa.
  5. Nomination are available online for the 2012 Hillsborough County Women's Hall of Fame at www.hillsboroughcounty.org/statusofwomen. The deadline for nominations are Jan. 15.
