Texting on Westchase Area Roads: Should it be Illegal?

The Florida Senate is once again considering joining the 39 states that have already outlawed the act on their roads.

Westchase area motorists who like to cruise down area roads while sending text messages to their friends might soon find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The Florida Senate is once again taking up a bill that would ban texting-while-driving, according to The Tampa Tribune.

While the state’s Legislature has tried to ban the act in the past and failed, proponents of the measure keep bringing it back up.

If the bill makes it through the Legislature, it would make texting behind the wheel a secondary offense, the Tribune reported. That means police would have to have another reason to pull a driver over to be able to issue a ticket.

According to Forbestexting-while-driving is linked to 11 teen deaths a day. It’s also blamed as a root cause behind 25 percent of the accidents in the country for a total of 1.6 million a year.
