What Should Replace Local Sweetbay Supermarkets?

The large grocery store closed its doors this week. What would you like to see take its place?

Now that both local Sweetbay stores have closed, attention has turned to what to do with the large, empty retail spaces left behind.

On the Weschase Patch Facebook page, users seemed to favor seeing one of three retailers move in to the space.

Beth Padgett Edwards voted for a Total Wine.

Tylene Guy Headley,  Heather Long, Christina Rio Patterson and Leslie Blaze all commented that they would like to see a Fresh Market move in.

Some users also mentioned that a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's would be nice to have nearby.

What would you like to see move in to the space left by Sweetbay? Is there a larget retailer that you think would do well in Westchase? Tell us in the comments section below.

More on the closing

Several local Sweetbay Supermarkets were among 33 under-performing stores in Florida scheduled to close in February.

Many stores begain liquidation sales in the last 2 weeks, with some stores offering as much as 50 percent off.

The store at 10617 Sheldon Road closed on Monday. The other Westchase area location at 4519 Gunn Highway, was scheduled to close on Wednesday.

I worked at the Sweetbay on East Lake and McMullen Booth/ Tampa Rd. in Boot Ranch. It was so upsetting to us, the last two weeks of cleaning and watching everything go as we condensed items to smaller areas each day. We did not want to see this .and are still upset by it. About 6 months ago, I emailed Trader Joe's to mention of some stores that are sitting empty, like the one on W. Hillsborough that used to be a Publix. They told me that they are scouting the areas but did not forsee anything at that time. A close friend in New York is manager of a Trader Joe's.

Oh we need a Trader Joes! It would be perfect in the Sweet Bay location! That street gets so much traffic and its so convenient for people coming to and from work. I think I will email them as well.

It seems that these are just rumors for now regarding Kroger. I had spoken with my manager and many others that I had worked with and we all thought the same thing. However, research had showed at that time, a few weeks ago, that there is no indication of such a move.

Some close friends of mine who live in New York happen to be a manager of Trader Joe's and they want to move down here when Trader Joe's comes in. This is in the making that they ARE scouting for the right place and area. I think it would be perfect for this area!
