Football: Alonso Ravens Show Skill At Tournament

The Ravens tested out some of their new passing schemes at one of the biggest tournaments in the Bay-area over the weekend.

After the Ravens stumbled through the second half of 2011 and then proceeded to graduate some of the best talent they've ever had; Brandon Holloway, Jordan Davis and Marcus Neuman, it looked like 2012 might be a year that gets forgotten. Well, if the summer of 2012 is any indication, that theory is out the window.

The Ravens went 5-1 in pool play at the Big County Preps 9 Route during this weekend's tournament. The Ravens beat Freedom High School before being defeated by East Lake High School.

Alonso quarterback Brandon Hawkins, a senior, looked more comfortable than ever this weekend with his new group of receivers. Replacing Davis as both a receiving option and safety is no small task.

"You're always going to have problems replacing someone like that (Davis)," said head coach Brian Emanuel.

However, Emanuel is very pleased with the offensive weapons at his disposal. Bruising junior running back Ish Witter, "hasn't missed a workout" and is now in the, "1,200 Club" according to Emanuel. The 1,200 Club is someone who can squat, dead-lift, bench press over 1,200 pounds. Receivers in juniors Brandon Robinson and Marcus Mosely pose legitimate threats on the outside.

"He's(Mosely) a legitimate BCS kid, he jumps out of the gate and goes up for the ball," Emanuel said.

The bright spot of the tournament was Hawkins evolving into a true team leader both vocally and with his performance.

"He(Brandon) is the leader, bar-none, he's better than a lot of QBs out here," Emanuel said.

"The whole team stepped up this weekend and did what it was supposed to do," Hawkins said. "I feel like some of the younger players look up to me and I try to motivate them."
