Deer Park Student Wins Chess Tournament

Tristan Goodrich, 9, of Deer Park Elementary School, took first place in the United Minds Chess Scholastic Tournaments in the K-5 Division.


"It's important that kids balance purely fun activities with those that teach them new skills," says Caroline Goodrich, mother of 9-year-old chess champion Tristan. "Chess is something that they'll be able to enjoy their entire life."

Tristan, 9, won first place in the United Minds Chess Scholastic Tournaments recently.

The tournament are open and rated tournaments held on the first Saturday of every month. The next tournament will be held Saturday, August 4, 2012. All United States Chess Federation registered players are welcome. The tournament will be held at the Northdale Recreation Center, Tampa, from 12:00 noon-5:30 p.m. Registration closes at 12:30 p.m.; the first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
