Planning Under Way For Deer Park Sock Hop

The second annual Mother-Son Be Bop Sock Hop will take place in April.

One of Deer Park Elementary's signature events is approaching and the school is looking for the community's help.

The Mother-Son Be Bop Sock Hop will take place on April 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Right now, organizers are trying to locate classic car enthusiasts who would be willing to have their cars on display in the school parking lot during the event.

The Sock Hop celebrates boys and mother figures in their lives in a classic 1950s sock hop setting replete with classic cars, a soda jerk, bake sale, hoola hoop contest and an Elvis impersonator.

There will be security present at all times around the cars, said Caroline Goodrich, event organizer. A King of the Road trophy will be presented, along with ribbons awarded to the boys' favorite car choice.

"The goal is simply to celebrate mothers and sons," Goodrich said, adding that the event is designed to complement the already established Daddy Daughter Dance at the school which takes place on Feb. 15.

Organizers say they are in need of following items for this year's event:

  • Cars of the '50s, '60s and '70s
  • Both cash and in-kind event sponsors are needed.
  • Hula Hoops
  • Bake sale items (old-fashioned theme)
  • Period actors in costume.
