Tasty Fundraiser On Tap For This Weekend

More than a dozen food vendors will be on hand at The Taste of Westchase this Saturday.

From Sheldon Road to Linebaugh Avenue, Westchase is home to a variety of eateries. But for a day many of those restaurants will be located under one roof.

The first annual Taste of Westchase comes to the area Saturday, Feb. 26. The event, put on by the PTA, will be located at the from 3pm-8pm.

"We want everyone from college students, to newborns to seniors to come out and have a good time," said Melodie Jaffe, co-chair of the Taste and vice president of Westchase Elementary PTA.

Since the summer, Jaffe and Paula Bellino, the event's other co-chair, have worked along with other volunteers to organize the event. The idea to do a Taste event came last year when the PTA put on its casino night fundraiser.

“We had a lot of restaurants tell us they’d like to do some kind of Taste of Westchase," Jaffe said. "So this year, in deciding what we would do, we realized what a great idea it would be. We could make it fun for everyone and the whole community.”

About a dozen restaurants and food vendors will be at Saturday's event. Admission is free. A $10 ticket grants attendees five tastings. The line-up includes about 10 restaurants including Zerillo's Italian Grill, Poblano's and Siam Thai. In addition, there will be activities like face painting, train rides and rock climbing. Entertainment includes singing groups and a live martial arts demonstration.

The Hyatt Clearwater Beach will have spa staff on hand to give massages. Proceeds from that booth will go to Relay for Life. But the proceeds generated from the Taste tickets will go to Westchase Elementary School, Jaffe said.

"We’re one of these schools that have a lot of parent involvement," said Jaffe, a mother of three, including two Westchase Elementary School students. "We’ve seen the need, since our school is getting older now, things need to be replaced."
