Benefits of Ginger

Ginger (zingiberis rhizoma recens), also known as Sheng Jiang in Chinese medicine is a warm and acrid medicinal herb that can be used topically and orally.

Topically Ginger is used in treatment of minor burns, boils, sprains and infected hangnails by healing, disinfecting, and alleviating pain.

Orally it is great for warming the stomach and lungs, stimulating the production of gastric juices and reducing toxicity of other herbs.  Digestively Ginger has been known to treat nausea (post surgery, chemotherapy, pregnancy), vomiting, indigestion, stomach aches, reduced/no appetite, flatulence, cramping and spasms in the intestines, and seafood poisoning.  It’s used to support the immune system and treat respiratory infections such as colds, influenza, coughing, fever, sinusitis, sore throats, chills, and catarrh.  It is also great in healing sprains, strains, muscular aches and pains, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and cramps and spasms in the uterus.

Ginger contains healing properties of Vitamins A and B, antispasmodic properties, minerals, and amino acids.

It can be used in different forms, such as cooking with the root and stems, taking as a tablets, capsule, or as a liquid extract, and as a tea.

A great way to utilize it is in an infusion.  Take 1 tbsp freshly grated ginger, 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon, and 1 tbsp of honey.  Steep the ginger in 1 cup of water for 3 minutes, strain the ginger into a mug and add the lemon and honey.  This infusion is effective in treating any of the above mentions ailments.
