Hillsborough County plans to allow healthy stray cats to be returned to the wild after they’ve been sterilized and vaccinated. Not everyone thinks the county’s plan is the best way to reduce animal deaths. What do you think, Westchase?
Hillsborough County has a death problem. That’s about the only point everyone in attendance at the May 1 County Commission meeting seemed to agree on. How best to address the number of cat and dog deaths, however, was a bone of contention for sure, especially in regard to cats. Residents, activists and veterinary experts lined up to speak both for and against the county’s new plan to reduce euthanasia rates for dogs and cats while increasing the “live outcome” rate. The plan, estimated to cost about $1.3 million in the first year alone, is designed to introduce a variety of programs all created with the same goal in mind: to stop the “senseless killing of animals,” as Hillsborough Commission Chairman Ken Hagan said. Ever thought about being a foster parent to a pet? Learn about the process at a library near you.

The shelter becomes very instrumental in getting the dog or cat placed. They begin to know dogs habits, strengths and weaknesses or behavior issues." Through May, animal services will team up with the Hillsborough County libraries to educate the public on how to get …

In recognition of National Pet Day, Westchase Patch is taking some time out to honor those special critters that often make our lives just a little more complete, but we need your help!
Whether they’re furry, feathered or just a little bit scaly, pets are awesome. That’s a point that a large percentage of Americans seem to agree upon. The Humane Society of the United States says there are about 78.2 million dogs owned in the United States. An estimated 86.4 million cats have homes to call their own. Collectively, Americans spent a whopping $53.33 billion on pet-related expenses in 2012, according to the American Pet Products Association. We’re on track to break that number in 2013 by more than $2 billion. The numbers speak volumes about just how much Americans love their pets. So does this interesting tidbit from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s website: “In 2011, six-out-of-ten pet owners, or 63.2%, …
