Local Skate Park Could Open by Summer’s End

Hillsborough County says the new feature at Jackson Springs Park could be ready in time for the kids to go back to school.

If the reaction of two Alonso High School students is any indication, Hillsborough County’s new skate park in Town ‘N Country should be a hit with teens. “It looks awesome,” sophomore Chase Spriggs was quoted by The Tampa Tribune as saying after he saw final design plans for the $600,000, 13,200-square-foot park during a recent county meeting. Spriggs and Angel Vasquez, a fellow Alonso student, hope to form a skateboard club at their school in the fall. If all goes as planned, the two will have a place to skate by then – a place they won’t get kicked out of. C, my understanding is the county pitched the park for Northdale first, but residents didn't want it there. They moved on another area and eventually settled on Jackson Springs Park. Alonso High kids seem to be rallying behind it. Not sure how much use Carrollwood kids will have for it, but it's not much of a drive from Plantation and other neighborhoods.   more ›

County To Offer Online Summer Camp Registration

Online registration will be available beginning May 6 at noon.

For the first time, Hillsborough County will offer online registration for Parks, Recreation and Conservation programs. Summer camp programs will be the first available through online registration beginning May 6 at noon. This new service allows prospective participants to browse, register and pay for programs offered at county parks. Online payments can be made with a credit/debit card. Check and money order payments are received at Rec2Six locations only.  The new online registration system is currently open for park patrons to create online profiles and to browse programs only. Power Outage Closes Upper Tampa Bay Park

Westchase residents have other options on places to go to enjoy some outdoor time until the park reopens.

Hoping to visit Upper Tampa Bay Park to take advantage of the mild weather and fairly low rain chances? You’re out of luck today, Feb. 25, and possibly tomorrow. A power outage has forced Hillsborough County to close the 8001 Double Branch Road park “until further notice,” according to a media release from the county. Residents who want to enjoy the great outdoors are being asked to visit other nearby parks, including: If you do plan to visit one of these parks, it’s looking like the weather might cooperate Monday at least. The National Weather Service says we’re in for a high of 81 Feb. 25 with about a 30 percent chance of rain during the daytime hours. Canoe and Kayak Rentals At Hillsborough Parks Near Westchase

Some Hillsborough County parks now offer canoe and kayak rentals.

It's time to get outside and get paddling, according to Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation. The county is now offering affordable access to Hillsborough County’s waterways. Four-hour canoe/kayak rentals are offered for $25 at several Hillsborough County Regional Parks. A park entry fee will also apply at $2 per vehicle carrying up to eight people, and $1 each additional person. Only cash, check and traveler’s check payments are accepted payment. The following Hillsborough County parks offer canoe and kayak rentals: Canoes or kayaks can be rented on-site at each entry station. Rentals at Upper Tampa Bay Park are conducted within the on-site environmental studies building. Those wishing to rent a canoe or kayak must be 18 years old, …

Hillsborough County's Parks A Hit This Summer

Consider saving gas and time this summer by visiting local county parks.

  From the pine flatwoods of Lake Rogers Park to the oyster bars of Upper Tampa Bay Park, Hillsborough County parks offer plenty of options for outdoor lovers this summer. And the best part about these staycations is the cost. An annual entrance pass for all county parks can be purchased online. The passes give residents access to 10 regional parks with more than 727 miles of hiking trails as well as opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking, horseback riding, camping, bicycling, canoeing and bird watching. An individual entrance pass is $50 for the year, starting on the date of purchase. A family entrance pass is $100 and a boat launch pass, to be used at all Hillsborough County boat ramps, is $100.
