The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is warning Westchase area residents to be mindful of crime prevention when leaving their cars unattended in parking lots.
There’s good news, bad news and news you can use on the auto burglary front in the Westchase area. The good news is that auto burglaries are technically down in the community overall, according to Cristal Bermudez-Nunez, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. The bad news is that were about 25 auto burglaries in the Westchase, Citrus Park and Carrollwood areas combined between April 1-27, according to the sheriff’s office’s online crime mapping tool. So, what’s the news you can use? The sheriff’s office says auto burglaries are often preventable if residents take a few steps to deter thieves who might want to snatch a purse, grab a wallet or swipe a CD left on a seat. Bermudez-Nunez said the sheriff’s office is noticing that auto burglars …

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s recent launch of a new webpage dedicated to publicizing wanted men and women enables residents to help take a bite out of crime, officials say.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has a new tool to use in its battle against crime. While the concept isn’t necessarily new, the design of the county’s new Find-a-Fugitive webpage is, said Cristal Bermudez Nunez, spokeswoman for the agency. The old Cell Block Shake Down webpage was taken down in favor of a cleaner, less graphics-heavy design that lets the sheriff’s office post the county’s Top 10 wanted fugitives and its Top 5 wanted “deadbeat parents” and “dangerous drivers.” Older cases are featured along with new ones on the site because it’s important to the sheriff’s office that people know “we haven’t forgotten about them,” Nunez said. “You may very well know these people,” she added. Find-a-Fugitive’s look is not only easier…

A Town ‘N Country man is behind bars after an April 22 incident on Sheldon Road that sent one deputy to the hospital.
Wilbur Yates was at the bus stop on Sheldon Road and Grosse Pointe Boulevard in Town ‘N Country around 4:50 p.m. April 22 when Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies say he was held up at gunpoint. Thinking fast, Yates flagged down a deputy that drove by shortly after the attack. With the armed man still in sight, fleeing on a bicycle, Deputy Felix Moret gave chase. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has an online tool residents can use to keep up with the area’s most-wanted fugitives.
The Internet is fast becoming the new “post office” for law enforcement agencies that want to make sure photos of their most wanted fugitives make it into circulation. Instead of just hanging posters on post office walls, law enforcement agencies these days are creating webpages to get the word out to area residents. Some are even using social media outlets like Facebook as tools in the fight against crime. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has its own online “post office” wall. Dubbed “Find-a-Fugitive,” the webpage features the photos and some background information on the county’s Top 10 most wanted. It also shares photos of deadbeat parents and “dangerous drivers.” Cristal Bermudez Nunez, sheriff's office spokeswoman, said the …
