Parents Speak Out on School Security

The Hillsborough County School Board is considering adding an additional 130 armed personnel at district schools.

School officials announced last week that they are considering adding an additional 130 armed personnel at Hillsborough schools. The announcement would be a long-term plan to continue enhanced security measures in the wake of last month's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. The new measure would cost $4.1 million. The School Board is set to take a vote on the security plan at its Jan. 15 meeting. News of the enhanced security has been met with mixed feelings from the community. Eric Holt, a Westchase resident and Westchase Elementary School Dad's Club member, said he had mixed feelings on the issue. Sheriff to Consider Posting Deputies at Hillsborough County Elementary Schools

Sheriff's spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon said the sheriff's office is working with the Hillsborough County School District to develop a committee to look into ways to secure elementary schools.

In the wake of the mass shooting Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is looking at long-term ways to better protect the county's elementary schools. According to sheriff's spokesman Detective Larry McKinnon, the sheriff's office is working with the Hillsborough County School Board to develop safeguards to prevent a similar tragedy from occurring at a local elementary school. McKinnon said the sheriff's office is developing a committee to look into ways to better protect elementary students, including the possibility of posting permanent deputies at elementary schools.
