The two local high schools joined 113 other Florida campuses on the magazine’s 2013 list.
Westchase area parents and students have reason to be proud. Both of the area’s high schools made it on Newsweeks’ Top 2,000 list of the best high schools in the country. Schools selected for the honor are “those that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads,” the magazine’s website says. Honorees are judged on such factors as graduation rate, college acceptance rate and test scores. Alonso was 1,836 on the list of 2,000. Sickles came in at 1,784. The top school in the state is the International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High. The No. 1 school in the nation, according to Newsweek, is in Bowling Green, Ky. When it comes to 2012 SAT scores, neither of Westchase's high schools ranked among the top 40 in the Tampa Bay area. The top 40 are highlighted in the rankings which were compiled by the Tampa Bay Business Journal using statistics from the Florida Department of Education. Palm Harbor University High came in fourth. The maximum possible SAT score is 2400. There are three parts to the SAT tests: math, verbal and writing. Each part is worth a maximum 800 points for a maximum total SAT score of 2400. Sickles High School's average 2012 SAT score was 1,439. Alonso High School's average 2012 SAT score was 1,349. Sickles grad Kyle Greene works at Tampa's Station 22 on Cross Creek Boulevard.
Firefighter and paramedic Kyle Greene has been at Station 22 on Cross Creek Boulevard since it opened in April. Greene spent most of his 7-year career at Station 5 near Robels Park, not including his rookie year at Station 7 near the Amtrak station. Greene also worked as a mechanic, as a technician in the ER with a private ambulance service. He grew up in Tampa and graduated from Sickles High School. Patch: What made you want to become a firefighter? Greene: My father, Frederick, was a city firefighter. He had a 28-year career and retired as Personnel Chief. I went to college to study nursing but plans fell through, so I fell back on firefighting. Plus firefighting is a good blend of what I wanted to do. It's physical work but mentally …

John Henson, who played at Sickles High and went on to the University of North Carolina, is projected to go in the top 10 in the 2012 NBA Draft.
Former Sickles High School standout John Henson is one of the top prospects in the 2012 NBA Draft this week, according to projections from NBADraft.net. Henson, a 6-foot-11, 220-pound power forward who played his collegiate basketball at the University of North Carolina, is projected to go in the top 10, possibly to the Detroit Pistons at No. 9, according to ESPN. Henson played for Coach Renaldo Garcia during his senior year at Sickles, according to TarHeelBlue.com, and previously attended Round Rock High School in Texas for three years. His prep accomplishments at Sickles included scoring a season-high 29 points against Tampa Bay Tech, being named the Tampa Bay Coaches Association Player of the Year and being a first-team all-state …

The Sickles High School Class of 2012 received diplomas May 31, while members of the Alonso High School Class of 2012 will collect theirs June 6.

Alonso High Shcool football and softball teams are up to win brand new uniforms, as well as the Sickles High School football team. But they need your help! The team are finalists in the Allen Sportswear "Dress the Champions" contest, which will provide a complete sponsorship for new home and away uniforms, a $50,000 value, to a winning squad in five different high school sports.
