Margarita Festival Benefits USF

The first-ever Tampa Bay Margarita Festival takes place later this month, but time is running out on early ticket discounts.

Margarita lovers who want to support a good cause might delight in an upcoming event set to take place at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in May. The first-ever Tampa Bay Margarita Festival is set for 2 to 10 p.m. on May 25. Attendees can anticipate live music, beach volleyball, fireworks and margaritas – lots of margaritas. Admission is $10 in advance, but rises to $15 on May 10. Margaritas range in price from $6 to $8. A portion of the proceeds will go to a University of South Florida nonprofit called Students in Free Enterprise, said Monica Varner, who is helping organize the festival, according to South Tampa Patch. Varner works with a group of people who are trying to raise awareness of downtown Tampa as a destination for events. She’s …

Tuition Hike in Store for Westchase College Students?

Florida lawmakers are considering another 6 percent raise in tuition at the state’s universities.

Westchase high school students who want to further their education at the University of South Florida or another state university may soon find themselves paying more to get in. Even though funding for universities is up and budget cuts are off the table for the first time in years, Florida lawmakers are considering a tuition hike of 6 percent, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Over the past few years, tuition at Florida’s universities has climbed by as much as 15 percent as funding from the state fell. While funding is improving, lawmakers say the hike is needed to help offset some of the damage done during leaner years, the Times reports. Gov. Rick Scott, however, does not agree. He’s promised to veto any proposal that includes a hike in…

USF Bulls Women's Team Makes NCAA Tournament

This is the second time in its history the basketball team will take part in the tourney.

The University of South Florida women’s basketball team has reason to celebrate. For the second time ever, the Bulls have made the NCAA tournament cut, according to Tampa Bay Times. The Bulls are ranked No. 10 and faceoff in their first tourney game Saturday, March 23 against Texas Tech in Lubbock. "We're just so happy to be in the tournament,” The Tampa Tribune quoted USF forward Inga Orekhova as saying. “We don't know much about Texas Tech, but we're going to find out a whole lot more.'' If the Bulls defeat Texas Tech, they’ll move onto the second round of post-season play, which runs March 25-26. The Division I semifinal and championship games take place this year April 7 and 9 in New Orleans. To check out the brackets, visit the NCAA …

USF’s iPad Quintet Performs Friday

The members of Touch will demonstrate why they are “the world’s foremost iPadists” during a performance at the School of Music Concert Hall.

Apple’s iPad is great for connecting to the Internet on the go, keeping up with emails and playing fun apps to pass the time, but music? Absolutely say the folks at the University of South Florida’s School of Music. So much so, the school has its own iPad quintet, Touch. The group plans to show its stuff this Friday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at USF’s School of Music Concert Hall, address here. Touch is made up of music school faculty members David A. Williams and Clint Randles. Graduate students Victor Ezquerra, Chris Morris and Nick Stefanic round out the musical talent. Electronic music is a growing trend around the world, according to USF News. “The schools in Great Britain, Scandinavia and Australia are 20 years ahead of this country in …

USF President Vows No Tuition Increase If Request Met

The Aim Higher initiative is asking state officials to fund $118 million toward state universities and colleges. If politicos do, state university officials say there will be no increase in 2012- 13.

University of South Florida students will not see a tuition increase next year if the school gets it way. The educational facility — along with other state universities — has agreed not to raise tuition costs at all in 2012-13 if Tallahassee legislators fund $118 million toward the state university system. USF President Judy Genshaft and other heads of state universities gathered at the state capital earlier this month to show support for the student-led Aim Higher initiative. University officials say public schools are historically under-funded. Gov. Rick Scott has previously stated he opposes tuition hikes. “Our students, faculty members, staff, community partners and legislators can be confident that our state universities are operating…

Skip Holtz Out at USF

The beleaguered coach is on his way out after three lackluster seasons. We'd like to hear your thoughts on the decision Westchase. .

University of South Florida football fans wanted change and it looks like they’re going to get it. Rather than a shift in strategy, however, they’re going to see a change in the Bulls’ head office. Coach Skip Holtz is out of a job after yesterday’s season finale, which ended with a 27-3 loss to Pittsburg, TBO.com is reporting. Holtz had been with the Bulls for three seasons, none of which produced winning performances. Earlier this week Holtz’s record with the Bulls had The Tampa Tribune speculating that change was in the air at USF. With an overall 16-21 record in Holtz’s three years at USF, it was clear something had to give. Fans, it was reasoned, wanted to see an immediate change either on the sidelines or the scoreboard. Today’s …

Zombies Take Over USF Campus

Humans vs. Zombies is a strategic, advanced form of tag open to all University of South Florida students each semester.

University of South Florida junior Ben Stone and freshman Meghan Kelley were headed to a lecture across campus when they were turned into zombies. “We were walking to class and they snuck up and got us both,” Stone said. Now, they’re part of a zombie horde that has taken over the campus. Though Halloween may be a fading memory, USF is participating in an advanced form of tag called Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ). The zombies lurk outside safety zones found in the library, classrooms and the Marshall Student Center. They hide in bushes and behind cars. They patiently wait to tag unsuspecting humans and make them join the ranks of undead. The game was initiated on the USF campus in spring 2010 and has been played each semester since fall 2010. The…
