Gloomy Skies Give Way to Sunny Weekend in Westchase

Forecasters are calling for rain to clear out as the long Presidents Day weekend approaches.

Grab those umbrellas if you’re heading out in the Westchase area, today, Feb. 14. The National Weather Service’s Ruskin office says the cold front that pushed through the area yesterday, causing some heavy rains and gusty winds, is likely to create more storms on Thursday and possibly again on Friday. Meteorologist Robert Garcia says area residents can expect fairly gloomy skies on Thursday with rain chances up in the 80 percent range. Severe weather, however, isn’t anticipated but an occasional thunderstorm might make an appearance. Aside from light sprinkles to pockets of heavy rain and some gusty winds, “(it’s going to be) just a gloomy looking day,” Garcia says. Rain chances diminish on Friday, but sprinkles are still possible. …

The 109th Gasparilla Pirate Festival is coming up this weekend, and Don Barnes, executive officer for Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, is ready. In a warehouse in downtown Tampa, pirate floats and convertibles for dignitaries are just waiting to saunter down the parade route for an expected audience of more than 200,000 people. “We’ve been doing this for 109 years, and our goal is to make sure it goes on for another 109 years,” said Barnes, who spends the whole year planning for the annual event. The way to reach that goal is to focus on safety. “We’ve really been pushing for what we call ‘Responsibility Matters,’ ” he said. “Responsibility Matters” is an educational campaign that aims to stop underage drinking.
