‘Junkyard Dog’ Has a Real Cinderella Story

A Westchase family rescued the stray and her nine puppies. Now they need some help finding homes for the pups.

A homeless dog with a friendly spirit has a story that sounds like it came straight out of a children’s movie.

Nanette was living in a junkyard in Tampa when Kelly Elmore and her daughter Lily, 8, spotted the pooch wandering around a dumpster several weeks ago. The friendly pup caught their attention and captured their hearts.

“We noticed she was pregnant and seemed to live in a junkyard,” Elmore said.

Enamored by the soon-to-be mother, the Elmores returned to the junkyard for three days, bringing Iams food for the pregnant dog.

“On the last drop off, we left our number with the junkyard owner,” Elmore said. “I asked that he contact me if she gave birth there.”

The call came the very next morning.

“I raced down there with a dog bed to collect the puppies and kept faithfully that Nanette would trust me.”

When Elmore arrived, the junkyard owner told her he couldn’t find Nanette, but he was able to gather all nine of her puppies.

“I was heartbroken,” Elmore said. “Within minutes, Nanette appeared and came running towards me. She absolutely trusted me.”

Nanette now calls the Elmore home her own, but Kelly says nine puppies are just a few too many to keep. That’s why she seeking out good homes for them. She’s calling on Westchase Patch readers to help. Elmore has written a blog that includes photos of the pups and she’s asking anyone interested in adopting one of them to comment on the post (or this story) so she can reach out.

Four puppies are still in need of homes. They’ve been to a veterinarian twice, Elmore said, and all are healthy, she reports.
