Westchase Getting New Neighbors?

The proposal to build 220 new townhomes near Westchase is now in the hands of Hillsborough County Commissioners.

Westchase residents might have new neighbors soon if a proposal to build 220 townhomes near the community meets with approval from Hillsborough County Commissioners.

Despite some resident objections, the plan got a green light recently from county staff.

In a 14-page recommendation to County Commissioners, staff wrote that Thomas Holdings’ proposal to build the townhome community on 85 acres off Sheldon Road is “compatible with the surrounding development pattern,” according to TBO.com.

While county staff hasn’t raised concerns about the project, Westchase residents have.

"We're respectfully asking you to deny the request," said Marty Sorrentino, a Westchase resident who spoke at a June hearing on the project. "Two-hundred and twenty is definitely too dense for this community. I live on a private lake with one house per 2.5 acres."

Cynthia Mercer, a Bridges resident, voiced concerns about potential traffic created by the plan and effects on neighboring schools.

"Sheldon Road cannot handle any more traffic," said Mercer, adding that it takes her 5 to 10 minutes already to get to Sheldon Road from her neighborhood.

County Commissioners will take up the request for a rezoning during an Aug. 13 meeting. M/I Homes will be the builder on the project if it gets a final thumbs up.
